Amazon Music is dominating Spotify in subscriber growth

Amazon Music Growth Outpaces Spotify, Apple Music

Streaming music in the USA is viewed by many as a two horse race between Apple Music and Spotify but as highlighted by a recent report from the Financial Times, it'd be foolish to count out the third place competitor.

The streaming service has only been around since 2016, and while many see them as another Spotify clone, the service has seen huge growth over their competition.

An Amazon executive actually commented about this news, pointing out that the company isn't trying to go after the same people as Apple Music and Spotify (oldsters, in other words).

"Amazon is the dark horse [in music]", Midia Research analyst Mark Mulligan told the publication. Amazon offers subscriptions at different price points.

In contrast, Spotify now dominates the market in overall subscribers but their growth rate sits far behind at 25 percent.

The number of people subscribing to the e-commerce group's Music Unlimited service has grown by about 70 per cent in the past year, according to individuals well-briefed on its performance. For example, if you ask Alexa to play David Bowie's "Heroes" on a Sonos One speaker, Amazon's streaming music service will be used. While only five percent of Spotify's subscribers are 55 years or older, Amazon Music has 14 percent of their users in this age bracket. "For the industry to reach its full potential", said Amazon Music vice president Steve Boom, "we can't just look at 15- to 22-year-olds". Prime members only have to drop $8 a month while Echo device users only have to pay $4.

What do you think of Amazon Music's subscriber growth?

Ars Technica notes that the service's growth is helped in a big way by how widespread Amazon's smart speakers and Alexa devices have become.
