Germany’s Merkel sits for anthems after shaking episodes

The German chancellor's health has become a matter of concern since Merkel's had three trembling episodes during official events in less than a month.

Earlier, Merkel shook back and forth as she stood outside and looked uncomfortable while watching a military ceremony marking the arrival of visiting Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne, who stood by her side.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel grappled with intensifying scrutiny of her health by opting to sit through a ceremony where she might have trembled again and dodging pointed questions from the press. The two officials took a seat despite the existing protocol for such an occasion.

"I believe that just as it happened one day, so it will disappear".

"I will have to live with it for a while now, but I am very well and people don't have to be anxious", she added.

She clarified, "I said recently that I am in a phase of processing the last military honors with President Zelenskiy".

That first bout of shaking was blamed on dehydration, but a second episode struck a week later at the end of June, just hours before she was due to board a plane for a G20 summit in Japan.

On June 18, Chancellor Merkel also desperately attempted to stop herself from shaking for at least a minute as she stood next to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Germany's political establishment has observed a respectful silence over the recent incidents of shaking, but mass-selling daily Bild asked whether Merkel should say more about her health after the third episode, arguing: "The silence, the dismissiveness is no longer so easy to understand".

At a news conference after Thursday's meeting with Ms Frederiksen, Mrs Merkel sidestepped a German reporter's question as to whether she has consulted her doctors and, if so, what the results were.

Merkel, who has no history of serious health issues, is also facing growing pressure to be more open about her ailment.

Merkel, who first came to her role in 2005, announced a year ago that once her term ends in 2021, she will not seek a fifth term, nor will she pursue any other political job thereafter.

German media continued to speculate over possible causes of the shaking, which ranged from low sugar levels to early-stage diabetes and neurological problems such as Alzheimer's. She has shown no sign since of wanting to give up the chancellorship before her term is up.

Merkel is renowned for her work ethic and has a reputation for outlasting other leaders at European Union summits with her ability to focus on the details of complex discussions deep into the night.

Merkel is famously private, only rarely making public appearances with her husband.
