Police say a women left her car running with three small children outside a pizza shop on 29th and Dauphin St. at about 9 p.m

Other men joined in on the fight and eventually, the suspect was punched and kicked until he was unconscious. She had their 3 children in the vehicle with her and she left them there while she dashed in.

At the same time, a 54-year-old man was outside and saw the woman leave the vehicle with the engine running. Once at the vehicle, he grabbed the auto thief and pulled him out, hitting him repeatedly.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told local NBC affiliate WCAU that the woman and her boyfriend were taken into custody, where they cooperated fully with law enforcement officers.

"He fled on foot about a half a block".

The would-be auto thief then drove several blocks while the father, also unidentified, gave chase and pulled the man out of the vehicle when the auto got stuck in traffic, according to a local NBC affiliate. "And the boyfriend caught up to him and there was some sort of physical struggle that ensued", Mr Small said. "It was at this time that a crowd of individuals stopped Mr. Hood and forced him to the ground", Philadelphia Police Homicide Captain Jason Smith said. Paramedics rushed him to Temple University Hospital, but it was too late to save his life.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said prosecutors are waiting for police to complete their investigation before commenting.

The SUV was taken on the evening of July 5 while the mother made a delivery for "DoorDash", an online, on-demand food service, police said, according to local reports.
