David Ortiz is recovering from third surgery after shooting

General Hospital, according to a statement from the Red Sox on behalf of his wife Tiffany. She did not disclose details about the complications but said Ortiz is "recovering well and in good spirits". But this is also a reminder of just how badly he was hurt in he attack and how far he has had - and still has - before being fully recovered. Ortiz was shot in the back, then had emergency surgery in the Dominican Republic before being airlifted to Boston.

"He went on about Devers for about 15 minutes", said Red Sox president Sam Kennedy, who visited Ortiz at Massachusetts General Hospital last Saturday.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic say Ortiz was not the intended target of the shooting.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Ortiz underwent emergency surgery and had to have his gallbladder and part of his intestine removed.

Several people have been arrested, including Victor Hugo Gomez Vasquez, the alleged mastermind of the plot. From there, the Boston Red Sox legend was flown out to Massachusettes where he received a second surgery as a precaution. Ortiz's condition was upgraded to good on June 18, but he has remained hospitalized in the weeks since. He was named World Series MVP for his performance against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013.
