A significant power outage is being reported in parts of Manhattan tonight.

It has been reported that the NY Fire Department responded to a transformer fire at West 64th St and West End Ave.

The city's subway system said it was working with utility Con Edison to determine the root cause of the outage, which it said was affecting Midtown and the Upper West Side.

Manhattan residents and visitors took to Twitter to post photos of the city without power, including eerie photos and video of pitch-black subway stations.

Power was out in much of Rockefeller Center.

The electricity cuts come on the anniversary of a massive power failure in 1977 that plunged the NY skyline into darkness and triggered widespread looting and arson. "I am so sorry that this happened", she said. We will continue to provide updates as soon as we have more information.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was in Iowa campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination when the outage struck, told CNN said he had spoken with the police commissioner and the deputy commissioner responsible for counterterrorism.

"From what we're seeing at this moment, this is simply a mechanical problem", de Blasio said. The singer was 30 minutes into her concert at Madison Square Garden when the venue house lights came on.

People gathered around Rockefeller Center and Times Square wandered the streets as traffic lights, restaurants and the usually illuminated advertising screens in the area all went dark. It advised people to stay away from underground stations. This also just happened to be the 42nd anniversary of the 1977 blackout in NY that lasted 25 hours.

Shouts of celebration could be heard in parts of Manhattan as power was restored, bringing lights and air conditioners back to life.
