New York Jets tight end Chris Herndon has been suspended for the first four games of the season after a 2018 DUI arrest

New York Jets tight end Chris Herndon, a key player on offense, was suspended four games Friday for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, stemming from a June 2018 drunken-driving arrest in New Jersey.

He pleaded guilty in January to driving while intoxicated, all but ensuring a suspension. Herndon will participate in training camp and the preseason but go on the suspended list in Week One. He played all 16 games in 2018, but he won't be eligible to join the active roster this season until Monday, October 7.

According to the police report, Herndon crashed into a Toyota Land Cruiser and totaled the vehicle, which was transporting a vintage automobile.

The Jets took Herndon in the fourth round (107th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Miami (FL). He failed a sobriety test and had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.14 percent, well above New Jersey's legal limit (below 0.08 percent). Commissioner Roger Goodell can dole out additional discipline when determining suspensions if he determines there were aggravating circumstances involved. NFL Network reported that a woman who was at the scene later claimed she was injured and that contributed to the suspension being longer than the typical two games for a first-time offender. The driver, who was 76 years old, suffered a bruised and gashed arm. Witnesses said Herndon may well have been going over 100 miles per hour at the time of the incident. He finished the year with 39 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns. Other options include 2019's fourth-round pick Trevon Wesco and veteran Daniel Brown.
