The equal-largest quake recorded in Australia has hit off the Kimberley coast, shaking items off shelves and stunning local residents who had never felt a tremor before.

The natural disaster was felt as far away as Perth where the ICU at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital shook for about a minute.

There is no threat of a tsunami to the Australian mainland, islands or territories, the weather bureau said.

There were also casualties nor damage to buildings.

The shallow natural disaster, with a depth of 10.0 km, was centered 202 km west of Broome, a city on the coast of Western Australia, according to the USGS.

The quake struck about 200 kilometres off the coast, between Broome and Port Hedland at 1.39pm local time.

"As it stands for as long as today, it is the biggest-equal natural disaster in Australia ever recorded", GeoScience Australia duty seismologist Dan Connolly told AAP.

People living as far as Perth reported feeling the quake.

Derby resident Jody Gaunt was having a beer with friends when they felt the first quake.

A first aftershock hit western Australia at 8.26am BST (3.26pm local time), with a magnitude of 4.9.

She told The Guardian: "We were sitting outside and our chairs were rocking".

Others said entire apartment buildings in Perth's suburbs shook for as long as three minutes during the quake.

"I just told him I think this is an quake and we were both quite shocked", Mr Wepener said.

The national broadcaster ABC said there were some reports of minor damage from the quake, and no injuries.

Stock at a number of stores was damaged when goods fell to the floor during the tremor.

"It came like three waves, quite strong, it's been like 20 years since I've felt one". You could see them moving. The whole house is vibrating, shaking and maybe lasted for 10 seconds.
