Serena Williams breaks Grand Slam pattern as Simona Halep wins Wimbledon title

Serena Williams arrives to play the final

Her only win had come at the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore in 2014. All Halep cared about was winning her first at the All England Club.

She was equally thrilled to have delivered on something her mum told her when she was growing up - that if she wanted to do "something really special in tennis" she would need to play in a Wimbledon final.

"She literally played out of her mind", Williams said of Halep's win during an on-court interview.

Seventh seed Simona Halep crushed eight-time victor Serena Williams in straight sets to win the women's singles title of the Wimbledon championships here on Saturday. Yet on the game's biggest stage the tiny introvert was transformed into a lion with ice in her veins, producing a near-faultless display to dismantle the greatest women's player in history. "I've always been intimidated a little bit when I faced Serena". "Whenever a player plays like that you just have to take your hat off".

"Well, I had nerves".

"I never played a better match", Halep said after the 56-minute Wimbledon final, as quoted by AFP.

"But I knew if we be patient and if we work hard, we get the feeling of the grass court". For viewers without a cable or satellite subscription, your best bet is to sign up for a standalone streaming service, most of which are easy to cancel and may be offering a free trial period.

Williams also lost in straight sets against Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final a year ago, and against Naomi Osaka at the U.S. Open last September.

That's despite the 37-year-old chasing a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

Williams has struggled with injuries recently and has also begun other ventures outside of tennis.

After the match ended, Halep was asked if she'd ever played better.

"I've just got to keep fighting, keep trying", she said.

At 2-2 Halep scooped up a ball she had no right to reach and Williams lurched forward to blaze a backhand long.

Halep tracked down everything, as is her wont. When Williams punctuated the match with a forehand that found the net, her 26th unforced error of the match, the seventh seed signalled for the partying to start back home in Bucharest, where a nation celebrated their first individual crown here.

The 27-year-old Halep set the tone by breaking the Williams serve in the opening game and raced into a 4-0 lead in front of 15,000 incredulous fans on Centre Court. When Williams failed to return the final rally that clinched the match, Halep sank to her knees and raised her racket high above her head, closing her eyes and grinning in triumph. Not only is he picking the victor, he's also betting on how many sets it goes and the exact score of the first set.

Williams, in stark contrast, came out looking a bit tight, short-arming shots and accumulating nine unforced errors before conjuring up a single victor. Like Kate this year, Meghan then joined her new sister-in-law to meet with the junior players.

However, as the final score shows, Simona proved why she was once ranked No. 1 in the world. Just stop all this insanity because she is trying to be everything.

Halep knew there would be a backlash and Williams raised the decibel level at the start of the second set, bent double, fists clenched and bellowing after a volleyed victor.
