While West Nile virus activity in Los Angeles County is off to a slow start this year, there are many hot summer months ahead which will lead to increased mosquito activity and WNV amplification and transmission.

Eleven people have been infected with West Nile virus in Clark County this year, most with a more severe form of the mosquito-borne illness, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

Alberta Health Services is encouraging Albertans to protect themselves against West Nile virus infection. In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus breed in stagnant water and multiply rapidly.

Dressing in light-coloured clothing - including trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and a hat - can help discourage mosquitoes from biting, according to Kennedy.

"Our message to the public is that West Nile virus is here, but it is preventable", Dr. Joe Iser, the Health District's chief health officer, said in a statement.

"It's important people be conscientious about self-protection whenever they're outside during the evening hours". However, four out of five people infected with the virus will not show any symptoms. Additionally, she said, Albertans should be using an approved insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin and could consider limiting the time they spend outside. Most cases of West Nile come with non-neurological symptoms, she said, which include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, skin rash, swollen glands and headache.

Philip Armstrong, a medical entomologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, says West Nile is typically detected in mosquitoes from late-June to mid-July so this year's detection is later than usual.

"Not in terms of mosquitoes we worry about ticks a lot hearing things expect especially with her so if I'm protecting ourselves from that", said Brianne Cronk of Stratford.
