A man has been arrested after a daylight stabbing in Sydney's CBD, where ordinary citizens chased and restrained the man with chairs and a milk crate.

"It would appear at this stage it is unprovoked, but we are keeping a very open mind as we move forward", said Supt Wood.

A witness, who was having lunch directly across from where the incident took place near the corners of King and Clarence Street, said he saw "a lot of people running".

Without hesitation, one man armed with nothing but a wicker chair from a nearby cafe slowly approached the alleged attacker. "These members of the public have jumped into this situation that was extremely hostile", Wood said."They have brought this person into custody and allowed us to do our job".
