Mojang cancels Minecraft 4K graphics upgrade

Microsoft Just Made All Your Minecraft Dreams Come True

Although this is awful news for fans of the series, there are still plenty of mods out there for PC users that will give players all sorts of new textures and enhanced graphics for the games.

Called the Super Duper Graphics Pack, the update would significantly improve the visual assets of the game and add a new dimension to the blocky universe. Cross-network play was announced alongside the SDGP, which had its own delay on Nintendo Switch, there's been countless content updates, there's now Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons, and so with Mojang still a relatively small company, there might simply not have been enough developers to do the root and branch overhaul that the ageing codebase needed.

In a new blog post on the Minecraft website, the studio said that the pack was "too technically demanding to implement as planned". First of all, we would have expected this kind of work - specifically, the work of deciding which devices would be targets for Minecraft's SDGP - would have been typified before that project had begun. The main reason it has been axed is to do with the pack's performance across devices.

That launch never happened, and now Minecraft devs are canceling the graphics pack altogether. Mojang and Microsoft jointly declared that Minecraft has sold 176 million copies as of May 2019. Microsoft continues to invest in and augment Minecraft with spinoffs like the AR-focused Minecraft Earth. Cross your fingers this means that the developers at Minecraft are doubling down on finding new ways to be innovative even across multiple platforms at once - cross those fingers so much! Mojang was not happy with it, so they scrapped it. Killing off the engine update after more than two years is a fairly extreme step. But yesterday those hopes were dashed on the jagged, aliased edge of a square of stone, as it was announced the pack is wack.
