The Phillies getting desperate with Charlie Manuel return

Manuel, 75, back in Phils' dugout as hitting coach

Former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel is the team's new hitting coach after Philadelphia relieved John Mallee of his duties, the team announced Tuesday.

Manuel, presided over the most successful era in franchise history, as the Phillies won five consecutive National League East titles between 2007 and 2011, including winning the 2008 World Series.

The Phillies have been contemplating changes to the coaching staff for a couple of weeks, and more changes could come. Manager Gabe Kapler, who is under contract through next season, appears safe, though he will come under review after the season. They led the division by three games at the end of May.

Despite the struggles, the Phillies are just two games back in the NL wild card race with a record of 60-58. Expectations were huge coming into the season but the results have brought mostly underachievement.

Overall, the Phillies are 19th in runs, 24th in batting average (.245) and 23rd in home runs (149) this season. He made his bones in the bigs, however, as a hitting coach, serving in that role for the Cleveland Indians from 1988 to 1989 and again from 1994 to 1999.

Under Mallee, described as an analytically-based hitting coach, the club has disappointed offensively, posting a.738 OPS this season, which ranks 12th in the National League and 22nd in the majors. But really, their offense has been bad by every measure.
