2 guards suspended and warden reassigned after Epstein death

Barr attends a farewell ceremony for Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., sent a second letter Tuesday to Attorney General William Barr on the death of Jeffrey Epstein, urging the Department of Justice to "rip up" a 2008 agreement made with U.S. Attorney's Office in Florida. That person also wasn't authorized to disclose information about the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

In 2008, two alleged Epstein victims, including Wild, sued the Department of Justice, claiming the government violated the Crime Victims' Rights Act by reaching a secret deal with Epstein without informing them. While talking to reporters Tuesday, the president said he wants a full investigation into Epstein's death, adding, there are too many suspicious circumstances.

The warden of an institution in upstate NY has been named the acting warden at the jail.

The Department of Justice did not identify the two guards, but the Times reports that one of the two was a former correctional officer that no longer worked with detainees, while the other had been forced to work overtime because of a staff shortage.

Epstein, 66, accused of sex trafficking, appears to have hanged himself, sources told several news outlets. But for reasons that have not been explained, he had been taken off that watch at the end of July and returned to the jail's special housing unit.

Jose Rojas, a union leader and teacher at a federal prison in Florida, said N'Diaye should be home without pay instead of being reassigned.

"Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein", Barr said Monday. "If he would have had common sense and followed policy, we wouldn't be here discussing this".

That deal, he said, "essentially shut down an ongoing Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part in Epstein's sex crimes".

They must also pass a physical-abilities test that measures their "ability to perform the essential functions of a correctional worker", such as detecting movement, climbing ladders and using handcuffs.

Attorney General William Barr has expressed outrage that Epstein was able to take his own life Saturday while under the care of the federal Bureau of Prisons while the inmate was facing sex trafficking charges.

Federal prosecutors in NY are pursuing a parallel investigation into whether any if his associates will face charges for assisting him in what authorities say was his rampant sexual abuse of girls as young as 14.

In the criminal case, authorities are most likely turning their attention to the team of recruiters and employees who, according to police reports, knew about Epstein's penchant for underage girls and lined up victims for him.
