India’s second moon mission ‘Chandrayaan-2’ left the earth’s orbit early on Wednesday

Bengaluru | India's Chandrayaan-2 has left Earth's orbit on Wednesday and is moving towards the mission's goal, the Moon.

The Chandrayaan 2 lunar spacecraft completed a critical manoeuver on its journey to the Moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation confirmed on Wednesday, putting it on a trajectory to reach the Moon's orbit by 20 August.

According to ISRO scientists, it carried out the mission process "Trans Lunar Inernity" (TLI) at 2.21 a.m. The spacecraft's liquid engine will be fired to insert Chandrayaan-2 into the impending lunar orbit. "With this, Chandrayaan-2 entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory", the space agency said.

It was held after the spacecraft raised five orbits around the earth between July 23 to August 6. The agency claimed the spacecraft crew is in good health and all systems on board the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft are performing normally.

The orbiter carries eight scientific payloads for mapping the lunar surface and study the exosphere (outer atmosphere) of the Moon while the lander carries three scientific payloads to conduct surface and subsurface science experiments.

Chandrayaan-2 was initially scheduled to launch on 15 July, but was called off due to a technical snag in its launch vehicle system.

Chandrayaan-2 is loaded with 13 desi payloads that will do a detailed study of topography, seismography, mineral identification and distribution, surface chemical composition, thermo-physical characteristics of top soil and composition of the tenuous lunar atmosphere for a new understanding of the origin and evolution of Moon. The ISRO will now carry out lunar orbit insertion.

"Following this, there will be four orbit maneuvers to make the spacecraft enter its final orbit, passing over the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the moon's surface", said ISRO.

Subsequently, the lander will separate from the orbiter and enter into a 100kmx30km orbit around the moon, and then, it will perform a series of "complex braking" manoeuvres to soft land in the south polar region of the moon on September 7.

Chandrayaan-2 launched on July 22. This is the main goal of the lunar transfer phase of the mission.

The almost 150 million US dollars worth of Moon Mission aims at gathering data on water, minerals and rock formations on the lunar surface. No country has reached this part of the moon so far.
