Carrie Lam's comments come after China said the anti-government protests that have swept the city over the past two months had begun to show"sprouts of terrorism

"Protesters have been frequently using extremely unsafe tools to attack the police in recent days, constituting serious crimes with sprouts of terrorism emerging", said Hong Kong and Macau Affairs office spokesman Yang Guang in Beijing.

At the end of July, anger boils over after masked men - suspected of being triad gangsters - attack protesters inside a train station.

Hong Kong law permits life imprisonment for those who commit violent acts or acts that might interfere with flight safety at an airport.

Flights have resumed in and out of Hong Kong airport after two days of protests by pro-democracy activists caused chaos that paralysed the transport hub.

The state-owned Chinese media has also accused the United States of being the "black hand" behind the Hong Kong protests and attempting to foment a "colour revolution" on China's doorstep.

Police condemned the protesters overnight and said on Wednesday morning that a large group had "harassed and assaulted a visitor and a journalist". Some protesters said they believed one of those men was an undercover Chinese agent, while another was confirmed as a reporter from China's Global Times newspaper.

Five people were detained, bringing the total number of people arrested since the protests began in June to more than 600, police said.

Protests began 10 weeks ago in opposition to a bill that would allow the territory to extradite people facing criminal charges to mainland China, but the movement has expanded to include wider calls for democracy.

Yesterday morning, the city's leader, Carrie Lam, gave an at-times emotional press conference in which she warned of risky consequences if escalating violence was not curbed.

Demonstrators say they are fighting the erosion of the "one country, two systems" arrangement that enshrined some autonomy for Hong Kong when it returned to China in 1997. However, the PLA garrison has issued a video showing "anti-riot" exercises, and its top brass have warned violence is "absolutely impermissible".

Hong Kong's Airport Authority said on Wednesday it had obtained "an interim injunction to restrain persons from unlawfully and willfully obstructing or interfering" with airport operations. Protesters are only allowed to demonstrate in designated areas. One 22-year-old frontliner who identified himself as Pun said protesters needed to re-evaluate their strategy to continue with the fight.

Pelosi added, in an apparent reference to Trump's prioritizing of trade talks with China: "If we don't speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, we lose all moral authority to speak out elsewhere". We resolutely support the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Chief Executive and the Police in their efforts to restore law and order.

Cathay Pacific has asked passengers to avoid flying from Hong Kong Airport on Wednesday, even though protests have ended. The carrier later suspended two pilots.

As Financial Times commentator Jamil Anderlini noted this week: "Today, the biggest fortunes in Hong Kong rely on control of land and property in what is the most expensive real estate market in the world".

After initially just voicing their demands with peaceful demonstrations, the protesters adopted more aggressive tactics yesterday and created barricades with luggage trolleys to block passengers at the departure halls. "I felt like I was walking around and nobody gave us information".
