There have also been 61 cases of attempted suicide.

KCC's Director of Public Health Andrew Scott-Clark said: "Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy and a huge personal cost to friends, family and the community of the person who has died".

"Every day at Barnardos, especially through services like our helpline for children and teenagers, 0800 What's Up, we are working with children and young people whose lives are affected by negative circumstances, which sometimes lead to them feeling like there's no hope in their lives". Yet suicides are preventable. "We call on all countries to incorporate proven suicide prevention strategies into national health and education programs in a sustainable way", said WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Suicide rates were higher than the global, age-standardized average - 10.5 per 100,000 people - in Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.

"Whilst suicide rates here have remained relatively stable over the last decade, the level is without a doubt unacceptably high".

The report also found that almost three times as many men as women die by suicide in wealthy countries, in contrast to low- and middle-income countries, where the rates are more equal.

Suicide is the biggest killer in men under 49 and the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29, with student suicides growing by 79 per cent between 2007 and 2015.

In addition to limiting access to means of suicide, experts suggest that other effective measures to reduce deaths include responsible reporting of suicide in the media, such as avoiding language that sensationalises suicide and avoiding explicit description of methods used.

The New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies, along mental health education group Attitudes in Reverse, will additionally host a suicide prevention conference on September 23 to focus on suicide by youths. Similarly, in South Korea, a ban on the herbicide paraquat was followed by a 50% decrease in suicide deaths from pesticide poisoning from 2011-2013.

Only in five countries - Bangladesh, China, Lesotho, Morocco, and Myanmar - do women commit suicide at a higher rate than men. Yet, only 80 of the 183 WHO Member States for which estimates were produced in 2016 had good-quality vital registration data.

NHS Health Scotland has thrown its support behind the scheme, and has stressed that suicide prevention "is everyone's business".

It will warn of the dangers of graphic descriptions or depictions of suicide, which have been shown to trigger copycat suicides among people struggling with mental health issues.
