Walker Cup: United States produce superb comeback to retain trophy

Britain and Ireland, who led by two overnight, could only manage two-and-a-half points on the final day as they succumbed to defeat.

The two teams shared the morning foursomes with the all-English pairing of Conor Gough and Harry Hall adding to the point won by Fitzpatrick and Purcell.

GB&I then won the afternoon singles 5-3 with Stoke Park's Conor Gough - the second youngest-ever Englishman to play Walker Cup after Essex's Oliver Fisher in 2005 - scored maximum points for the hosts.

And they secured their first win over here since 2007 when John Augenstein beat England's Thomas Plumb 4&3. John Pak completed a flawless week.

The Americans claimed the first point of the session thanks to Smalley and Wu winning their match 2&1 against Fitzpatrick and Purcell.

But, after two concessions in the next three holes, the tide turned and, though Walker rolled in a 20-foot downhill birdie putt to win the tenth, it became a losing battle for the home pair.

Euan Walker extended team GB&I's lead to two after beating Steven Fisk.

The Scot, from Kilmarnock Barassie, was never behind in the match and had established a comfortable lead after winning three of the first five holes.

Rafferty was unable to complete the comeback and his defeat, coupled with Hall's 5&3 loss to Hagestad meant the United States were just two points away from victory.

The US Amateur runner-up was in control for lengthy periods of the contest and a par at the 17 was enough to record the first point of the afternoon for the USA.

Walker, Scott and Caolan Rafferty also won singles matches for Britain and Ireland.

Matt Fitzpatrick admitted he found it hard to watch - but he was all smiles at the end as his brother Alex won both his matches on a fine opening day for Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool.

The US clawed their way back despite some encouraging home displays.

"No matter what happens in the foursomes tomorrow, we still have to play in the singles".

Casey started the final round one shot behind Bernd Ritthammer and Robert MacIntyre and played bogey-free for his 14th title on the European Tour.

"I think John Pak winning his match was important". Augenstein beat Purcell 2 and 1, Pak edged James Sugrue 1 up, and Wu beat Sloman 4 and 2.

"You know, I think these guys have tremendous games".
