United Kingdom condemns Iran over oil delivery to Assad regime

In mid-August, a Gibraltar court ordered the vessel's release against United States objections, after authorities said they had received assurances from Iran that the ship would not proceed to Syria.

"This sale of oil to (Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's) brutal regime is part of a pattern of behavior by the Government of Iran created to disrupt regional security".

Meanwhile, Kpler says that Iran also transfers oil cargos from one tanker to another in the middle of the sea, to avoid possible punishment.

India has been Iran's key trade partner and the second largest customer of Iran's oil, importing 457,000 barrels of Iranian oil a day before the USA withdrawal from the landmark Iranian nuclear deal in May 2018.

The seizure of the tanker escalated tensions as Iran later seized the British-flagged Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping route in the Gulf region.

"Iran has shown complete disregard for its own assurances over Adrian Darya 1", said Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary.

On Sunday, Iran said that its oil tanker Adrian Darya 1, which was detained by Britain off Gibraltar in July for allegedly breaking European Union sanctions on Syria and was released in mid-August, had unloaded its oil after docking somewhere in the Mediterranean region.

"The world will be better placed to judge Iran's position on other, more transcendental matters based on actions on this issue on which they have been under the microscope of global scrutiny", it said in a statement.

The UK also said if were to backtrack on their assurances they would be in "violation of worldwide norms and a morally bankrupt course of action".

The United States intends to impose sanctions against all who buys Iranian oil or interacts with the Islamic revolutionary guard Corps (the IRGC, the elite units of the Iranian armed forces).

The US vowed on Sunday to impose sanctions on any buyer of the 2.1 million barrels of Iranian crude oil on board. Iran's foreign ministry claimed on September 9 that the tanker had unloaded it cargo in an unnamed port, but TankerTrackers.com said on September 10 that its analysis of satellite imagery indicates it is still loaded.
