Remembering the 9/11 attacks, 18 years later

Ilhan Omar Changes Tune: 'September 11th Was an Attack on All of Us'

"September 11th was an attack on all of us", she wrote. "I feel a connection that no one I go to school with can really understand", Campbell, a University of MI sophomore, said as he attended the ceremony.

President Donald Trump is due at a ceremony at the Pentagon, where the third plane exploded, while Vice President Mike Pence will speak near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where heroic passengers brought down the fourth jet before it could reach Washington. The 9/11 attacks by the terrorist group al-Qaida were the deadliest ever on American soil.

Victims' relatives and dignitaries were gathered on the memorial plaza at the World Trade Center in NY as the ceremony started at 8:46 a.m. Wednesday.

In commemoration of the 18th anniversary, the victims and survivors, as well as the first responders and volunteers who risked their lives to save others, will be honored Wednesday at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which was built where the twin towers once stood.

In April, a video of Omar went viral, which featured remarks about the September 11, 2001, attacks, insisting that "some people did something". Let's not trivialize them or us.

"Here's the truth: Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I'm exhausted of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be exhausted of it", she said.

September 11, 2001 changed the face of the United States and and left almost 3,000 dead at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania where Flight 93 was forced to crash.

Diane Rawl, the mother of 1st Lt. Ryan D. Rawl of the South Carolina Army National Guard, said it was important for parents and grandparents to teach children about what happened on 9/11 and what happened as a result of the attacks.

Omar's video contrasted sharply with a statement she made in March about the attacks, which she described only as "some people did something".

The nation is still grappling with the aftermath of 9/11. More than 51,000 people have applied. The memorial was erected in the spring in honor of the firefighters, police officers, and others who died of 9/11-related toxins after the attack.

The tribute features six large stacks of granite, with a dedication 'to those whose actions in our time of need led to their injury, sickness, and death'. No one is named specifically.

Some 9/11 memorials elsewhere already included sickened rescue, recovery and cleanup workers, and there is a remembrance wall entirely focused on them in Nesconset, on Long Island.

A crowd of victims' relatives is expected at ground zero Wednesday.

September 11 has become known also as a day of service.
