Google Earth Leads to Discovery of Man Missing Since 1997

A previous resident was doing a"Google search on Google Earth in the Palm Beach area and noticed what appeared to be a vehicle in the pond behind a residence

His family finally have closure now, after a local property surveyor from the Florida town, browsing Google Maps satellite images of his neighborhood, spotted a vehicle partially submerged in a pond behind a nearby house.

He had called his girlfriend at around 9.30pm to tell her he would be home soon, but had not been heard from since. But, this time it was remarkable how Google Earth Images led to the remains of a missing Florida man inside a lake.

When William Moldt, 40, failed to come home after going clubbing in 1997, he was reported missing.

The subdivision was under construction when Moldt went missing, but the pond was already there.

According to the Charley Project - which documents cases involving missing persons - the auto had been plainly visible on Google Earth since 2007, but nobody had noticed it until now.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Moldt left a nightclub alone around 11 the night before he was reported missing.

He contacted a home owner near the pond, a drone was then dispatched and a auto uncovered.

"That previous resident contacted the current resident living on Moon Bay Circle and advised he noticed what appears to be a vehicle in a pond behind his home".

The case appeared to go cold and was taken on by the Charley Project, an initiative which keeps details of missing people after they stop receiving press attention.

The former resident, who was not identified by police, then contacted a current resident that lives adjacent from the submerged object.

The man who spotted the auto, a former resident, then called someone who lives in the neighborhood, who checked it out with a drone, Teri Barbera of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office told FOX Business.

Inside, were skeletal remains identified Tuesday as William Earl Moldt. The vehicle and the remains were towed to the Medical Examiner's Office for processing.

In the images from Google Earth, you can see what appears to be a vehicle in a retention pond that is flanked by homes.

"You can't determine what happened that many years ago, what transpired", police spokesperson Therese Barbera said.

He's believed to have had several drinks before leaving alone on November 7, 1997.
