The University of Oxford remained in the top spot since securing it in 2017.

National Taiwan University (NTU) placed 120th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020, up 50 spots from a year ago.

The institute is ranked higher for its industry income (73.9 points) and teaching (48.5 points). Newcomer IIT Ropar shares the joint top spot with IISc, Bengaluru, pushing IIT Indore, which remains in the 351-400 band, into the third spot.

The new world university rankings came as a mixed bag for India with no university featured in the top 300 for the first time since 2012, though the total number of entries from the country went up from 49 in 2018 to 56 this year. "We have expanded and created infrastructure last few years, brought talents from the entire country and world and financed research initiatives".

According to Hindustan Times, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which was the only Indian entry in the top 300 previous year, has dropped positions from the 301-350 group due to a "significant fall" in its research citation impact. "It is fabulous to see UNBC increase its score in every category Times Higher Education uses to measure elite global universities".

To get the rankings, Times Higher Education assessed nearly 1,400 post-secondary institutions across 92 countries.

This year Swinburne has improved its position in a number of globally recognised rankings.

Bothwell believes that The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. "It now needs to back up this aspiration with high levels of investment or risk declining further amid increasing global competition, especially from other parts of Asia".

"It is encouraging to see UCT demonstrate such excellence in worldwide rankings, particularly given the incredibly competitive, global arena we operate in". Iran one of the biggest climbers, left behind in its wake Australia, France, Russia and Taiwan with 40 universities. Because they attempt to compare universities that exist in a range of contexts - cultural, financial, historical, social and political - rankings are inherently imperfect, particularly when it comes to developing countries.
