Amazon chief Jeff Bezos pledged Thursday to make the U.S. technology and retail giant carbon neutral by 2040 and encourage other firms to do likewise, in a bid to help meet the goals of the Paris climate accord 10 years early.

'We're done being in the middle of the herd on this issue-we've chose to use our size and scale to make a difference, ' claims Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and chief executive, in a launch statement which very pointedly does not mention the walkout nor the protestor's demands.

Amazon will meet the goals of the Paris climate accord 10 years ahead of schedule, according to Bezos after The Trump administration announced in June 2017 it would be withdrawing from it.

The company also pledged to buy 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from United States vehicle design and manufacturing startup Rivian Automotive. It's also launching a $100 million climate fund with The Nature Conservancy, and launched a new sustainability website for reporting on its initiatives.

The group's stated objective includes the desire for Amazon to stop donating to politicians and lobbyists who deny climate change and to stop awarding contracts to fossil fuel companies.

"We need to be targeting, creating the technology to get there by 2030, so poor countries can follow our lead by 2050", Sheppard said. Amazon has funded a community of wind and photovoltaic farms as a part of a long-time period objective of powering its world infrastructure with 100% renewable power. Amazon becomes the first signatory of this pledge.

Acknowledging a steady drumbeat of criticism from activists and a vocal group of his own employees, Amazon.com Inc. founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos announced the formation of a new organization, the Climate Pledge, to meet the goals of the landmark Paris climate agreement 10 years early. The company also said it aims to reach 80 percent renewable energy by 2024 and 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. How many Amazon employees are taking part in these climate protests?

Moving to net zero carbon for 50 percent of Amazon shipments by 2030 and 100 percent by 2040.

In addition to the all-electric vans, Bezos announced a new $100 million reforestation effort, as well as a broader initiative to make the company carbon neutral by 2040.

"Throwing money at carbon offsets and continuing to support the oil giants find even more oil is an early indication that Jeff Bezos doesn't understand the transition that is needed", Cook said. Nevertheless, Amazon's latest announcement should push other companies to achieve a carbon-neutral status which will ultimately be good for the environment.

Amazon packaging will be redesigned to reduce waste.

Across the globe Friday students and employees are walking out of schools and businesses in a Global Climate Strike to urge leaders to get serious about fighting climate change.
