The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics was jointly awarded to three scientists for furthering our understanding of the universe on Tuesday.

It will be a busy day full of toasts and celebrations for James Peebles, the Canadian scientist who won the Nobel Prize for Physics on Tuesday, but he said the night will hopefully end like any other - with "a quiet dinner" with his wife.

Developed over two decades since the mid-1960s, Peebles' theoretical framework is "the basis of our contemporary ideas about the Universe".

The Nobel prizes for medicine and physics were awarded earlier this week.

And in a case of life imitating art, Tuesday's Nobel Prize announcement included the opening lyrics of "The Big Bang Theory" theme song: "Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then almost 14 billion years ago, expansion started".

Peebles' office is full of theses, books and plants, says Page, and he goes to group lunches with students in his department on Fridays.

"Jim Peebles is an extraordinary physicist, a man who has thought deeply and clearly about the structure of the universe", Eisgruber said.

Peebles was born in Canada and has spent his career at Princeton University, where he's an Albert Einstein professor of science.

"I have a peaceful life", he said, laughing. Mayor and Queloz's discovery revolutionised planet hunting and led to a wave of discoveries in places that astronomers hadn't considered exploring -astronomers now know of more than 4,000 exoplanets.

Using custom-made instruments at their observatory in southern France in October 1995, Mayor and Queloz were able to detect a gaseous ball similar in size to Jupiter, orbiting a star around 50 light-years from our own Sun.

The announcement of the winners of this year's Nobel in physics began with a nod to an unlikely cultural reference: the opening lyrics to the show's theme song.

This year's Nobel Prize is worth 9 million kronor ($918,000).

James Peebles, a 2019 Nobel laureate in physics, was awarded the prize for his theories about what happened soon after the Big Bang.

As for the whirlpool question from Peebles' lecture in 1971: since Princeton is in the northern hemisphere, if the professor had a large enough Value-Added Tax, the water would drain clockwise.

Professor Queloz said the discovery of exoplanets has led him to believe humans can not be alone in the universe.

Peebles said the awards and prizes are "very much appreciated" but said that's not why young people should study the sciences. This year's physics prize will be followed by the awards for chemistry on Wednesday, literature on Thursday and the peace prize on Friday. No prize was awarded past year amid sexual harassment and abuse allegations against Jean-Claude Arnault, the husband of an academy member and a recipient of academy funds, according to the Washington Post.

According to a press release by Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Peebles' insights into physical cosmology have enriched the entire field of research and laid a foundation for the transformation of cosmology over the last fifty years, from speculation to science.
