Police secures the area after a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle

A deadly shooting broke out in the eastern German city of Halle on Wednesday afternoon, German police said, killing at least two people.

But a police spokesman could not confirm this to Euronews, saying it happened on a street containing both a church and a synagogue, not necessarily outside the Jewish place of worship. Police could not be reached immediately for confirmation.

Halle police confirmed on Twitter that "multiple shots were fired" and that multiple suspects fled the scene in a auto.

Police say they have launched an urgent search to find the attacker, and told residents to stay in their homes or find safe shelter. It did not give any details of the person arrested and said police were in the process of stabilising the situation.

The Bild newspaper said the attack took place near a synagogue in the Paulus area of the city but this has not been officially confirmed.

They tweeted: "We have a deployment in Halle".

Other witnesses told Mitteldeutsche Zeitung that the attack unfolded right outside a kebab shop and that some shots were fired from inside a auto. It wasn't clear whether that shooting was related to the shooting in Halle.
