Protesters blocked a bridge in Amsterdam

Protests are expected to spread across dozens of cities, including Delhi and NY, in the days and weeks ahead as activists call for urgent action on global climate and wildlife emergencies.

In Brisbane, a man has suspended himself underneath the city's Story Bridge as part of protests, with emergency services trying to reach him to safely get him down. He also has enough food and supplies to stay up there for multiple days.

Members of Extinction Rebellion said police confiscated six vehicles as well as gazebos, portable toilets and bean bags - and have since claimed that the arrests were pre-emptive. "But this is a public health emergency, and they aren't acting as fast as they should".

In a friendly atmosphere, in the rain, they held a citizen's assembly in the middle of Tuesday morning to discuss the day's activities and the logistical organization of the camp.

Similar demonstrations were taking place in Berlin, Sydney, Amsterdam and Madrid on Monday, and organizers said more were expected in up to 60 cities around the world, including NY and Washington, D.C., as part of what they called an "international rebellion".

The protest was organized by climate activism organization Extinction Rebellion, according to CNBC.

They say between 10 and 11 p.m., "police were forced to arrest" environmental protesters who refused to leave the crossing, even after requests and warnings.

"Parliament declared a climate and environment emergency in April and we've seen absolutely nothing since".

Those protesting join activists across the world, including thousands in major European cities.

Around 30 people were arrested as the Extinction Rebellion movement staged a day of disruptive protest in the capital on Monday, culminating in a sit-in at a busy city intersection in the evening rush hour.

Protests organized by the group are scheduled to last two weeks.

Meanwhile, Extinction Rebellion ringleader Eric "Serge" Herbert avoided a conviction in courts after allegedly being caught protesting in Brisbane's CBD yesterday, breaching his bail conditions. (AAP) The XR Red Rebel Brigade will appear at demonstrations across the world in protests expected to bring everyday business to a stand still.

Earlier in London, police said some 135 climate activists were arrested.

Demonstrators who occupied the bridge issued an apology to motorists for any disruption the protest caused, but said it was necessary to raise the profile of the climate issue.
