The blast hit a tanker that belongs to the National Iranian Oil Company and set the vessel ablaze 120km (60 miles) off the coast of the Saudi port city of Jeddah, Iran's Students News Agency (ISNA) reported.

State television said the explosion damaged two storerooms aboard the unnamed oil tanker and caused an oil leak into the Red Sea, without elaborating further.

IRNA quoted a statement from Iran's national oil tanker firm as saying an attack targeted a tanker it identified as the Sabity. According to the the ship tracking website Marine Traffic the tanker was heading to Suez.

The US has responded by deploying "defensive" troops to Saudi Arabia to protect against any possible threat from Iran.

"All the ship´s crew are safe and the ship is stable too", said NITC, adding those on board were trying to fix the damage.

Experts on board to investigate suspected it was a "terrorist attack", the agency said, citing unidentified sources.

The October 11 incident could increase tensions between Iran, the United States, and its allies.

Tensions have been high between regional foes Iran and Saudi Arabia since an attack on the kingdom's two oil facilities on 14 September that caused fires and damage, shutting down 5.7 million barrels per day of production - more than five percent of global oil supply.

Yemeni Houthi rebels that fight Saudi troops since 2015 have claimed responsibility for the attack, but Riyadh and its ally Washington pinned the blame to Iran - a claim which it vehemently denied.

Iran has denied involvement in all these incidents.
