"I managed to find a good position on the return at the end of the first set and beginning of the second".

"I start to feel different, even if I try to stay the same", said Medvedev, who added that other players "start to talk to you differently".

"I'm happy because I was losing to him last week and I was playing really good also", 10th-seeded Fognini said.

Tsitsipas served successfully for the match at 5-3, which finished Djokovic's campaign for a fifth Shanghai title and 34th at Masters level. The Italian does have a little to prove on hard court still, but as I've said before, Thiem in quick conditions during the later stages of the season has not been a recipe for success, and Berrettini certainly isn't without a decent chance at [2.72] against the Austrian tomorrow afternoon.

Defending champion Djokovic was flawless at times on Thursday in a clinical display, controlling Isner's powerful serve.

Medvedev is in scintillating form, having reached a staggering eight finals this year including at the US Open.

He did so after fourth-ranked Medvedev tamed self-styled "wild horse" Fabio Fognini 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) to canter into the semi-finals.

Prior to Friday's match, Fognini said Medvedev was one of the most risky players to face.

Second seed Roger Federer saved five set points in the opening set against Belgium's David Goffin on his way to a 7-6 (7) 6-4 victory.

Another break followed as Djokovic raced three games clear and, though Isner regained some composure to stem the tide, he was no match for the top seed's unerring serve. The 21-year-old Greek defeated Djokovic in their first meeting at the 2018 Toronto tournament and Djokovic won their match in Madrid this season. "He served for the set at 6-5. I felt it was one of the best serving matches I've had".

The 38-year-old Swiss now faces Alexander Zverev after the German came through 6-0 7-6 (4) against Russian opponent Andrey Rublev.
