DC Trey Gowdy Joins Donald Trump’s Legal Team As Impeachment Ramps Up Former South Carolina congressman tapped to represent the president

Trey Gowdy of SC has signed on to President Trump's outside legal team in his fight against impeachment by the House.

White House counsel Pat Cipollone wrote in a letter to House Democratic leaders Monday that their inquiry has proceeded in a "manner that violates fundamental fairness and constitutionally mandated due process" and "lacks any legitimate constitutional foundation" or "pretense of fairness".

"I am even more convinced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got-and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump", Gowdy told Fox News in May 2018.

Gowdy, 55, is best known for his dogged, two-year investigation of Hillary Clinton that accused the Obama administration of lethal mistakes leading up the Benghazi attacks but produced no "smoking gun" pointing to wrongdoing by the former secretary of state.

He is also recognized for his impartiality and his respect for the rule of law.

"The notion that you can withhold information and documents from Congress no matter whether you're the party in power or not in power is wrong".

Gowdy was often criticized by Democrats for how he conducted the investigation into the 2012 Benghazi attacks, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) released a statement slamming Gowdy for just that. However, Gowdy will work with the president and his allies-who once frequently bashed him-to help fend off impeachment proceedings. The Republican House majority flipped in the 2018 midterm election, and in October 2019 the Democratic majority began spearheading an impeachment inquiry into whistleblower accusations that President Trump attempted to coerce Ukraine into digging up damaging information on a political rival by threatening to withhold crucial US military aid to that country.

Kurt Bardella, a former GOP spokesman for the oversight panel who is now an outspoken Trump critic, said Gowdy's return "speaks to the complete hypocrisy at play here".

As chairman of what was then called the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Gowdy was loathe to hold public hearings when he could convene private member briefings instead, arguing these venues were more productive than allowing lawmakers to grandstand in front of the cameras. Tim Scott, R-S.C., Gowdy's very close friend. His legal skills and his advocacy will serve the President well. "Trey's command of the law is well known and his service on Capitol Hill will be a great asset as a member of our team", Sekulow said in a statement.

In response to a question from us about Gowdy becoming his chief attorney, Trump replied before boarding the Marine One helicopter that the former congressman has "a problem. he can't start for another couple of months because of lobbying rules and regulations".
