McConnell told reporters that it's still a very risky situation and another collapse is possible. Three others are said to be missing.

News outlets report construction workers ran to safety as the Hard Rock Hotel, which was under construction, came crashing down. It showed what looked like a metal structure - part of the building or a piece of construction equipment - tumbling to the ground and people running from the scene as clouds of dust billowed up and around the streetcar, obscuring the view like a thick fog.

One person was killed, 18 were driven to local hospitals for treatment and three were still missing, according to New Orleans Fire Superintendent Timothy McConnell and EMS Director Dr. Emily Nichols.

"It is unsupported and very unsafe", McConnell said.

According to nola.com, a rescue mission is now underway at the hotel and an urban search and rescue team are sweeping the building for the three missing workers "despite fear of an additional crane collapse".

A scary scene was captured on video this Saturday morning showing a large portion of the Hard Rock Hotel on Canal Street collapsing onto the road.

Crews had been hoisting and installing a rooftop pool this week, local affiliate FOX 8 reported. The facility was also set to be opened in Spring 2020.

The development calls for 350 hotel rooms and condominiums.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards is in New Orleans urging people to stay away from the area of the collapse. "And I think we should all be very thankful that pedestrians and motorists on the street were all able to get out safely".

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
