Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India Friday for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India Friday for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

China hopes itself will develop well and wishes India the same, said the president, adding that the two countries should help each other to accomplish their respective goals and "brighten up" each other.

India and China plan to set up a new mechanism to discuss ways and means to reduce trade deficit ($53 billion), enhance mutual trade, investment and services. "It is not for other countries to comment on the internal affairs of India", India's External Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The two countries will issue separate statements today after another one-to-one conversation before delegation-level talks, the official said.

Beijing is insistent that New Delhi must now sign the mega free-trade pact Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership or RCEP, the talks for which began in 2012.

"Swachh Bharat" has been a pet project of the Prime Minister ever since he came to power in 2014 and his government, especially Minister Rajyavrdhan Singh Rathore also launched the #HumFitTohIndiaFit movement.

India is under increasing pressure to decide whether it will be a part of the China-backed grouping that is seeking to conclude negotiations by November.

Xi will head to Nepal later today where he is expected to push for China's further involvement in developing its infrastructure as part of his signature One Belt On Road initiative to boost trade and transport links across Asia.

Speaking to the media, Indian foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale said that there was a "good discussion" on trade.

Modi said both countries have made a decision to be sensitive to each other's concerns as he and Xi sat down for delegation-level talks on Saturday in the seaside temple town of Mamallapuram. Modi explained that he had received a renewed mandate for economic development, and Xi acknowledged the mandate, saying he looked forward to working with Modi "very closely on all issues for the next 4.5 years", Gokhale said.

They were of the view that India and China share the common objective of working for a peaceful, secure and prosperous world in which all countries can pursue their development within a rules-based global order.

China supported Pakistan in raising India's actions at the U.N. General Assembly meeting in NY. During talks, China might have urged India to take an independent decision on telecom equipment maker Huawei's bid for India's proposed 3G network and not be swayed by United States pressure. He invited Modi for meetings in China again.

Misri also stressed the importance of India-China cooperation under multilateral frameworks such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and the G20.

Modi and Xi also agreed to "encourage" more cross-border investment.

Noting that he attaches great importance to the friendship with Xi, Modi said he is willing to maintain such conducive and effective strategic communication with Xi and together create a lovely future for India-China relations. "I think this number can easily be multiplied at least fivefold if not tenfold in just the coming few years", he said.
